Honoring Our Roots and Guiding Principles
At the Portland Village Association (PVA), we embrace a sense of gratitude, respect, and intentionality in all that we do. From our Land Acknowledgment to our guiding verses, we strive to create spaces that honor the past, ground us in the present, and inspire a brighter future for all.
Land Acknowledgment
General Acknowledgment:
"Our school and community gather on the ancestral lands of the Indigenous People of the Lower Columbia. We honor the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the many Indigenous peoples—both federally recognized and not—who have cared for and lived on this land for countless generations.
With deep respect, we acknowledge the history of displacement, systemic racism, and the resilience of these communities. We offer our gratitude for their traditions, knowledge, and stewardship, which continue to inspire and guide us today."
Suggestions for Adaptability:
For children’s events: "We are on the traditional lands of the Indigenous People of the Lower Columbia. We honor the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and all Indigenous people who cared for this land long before us. We are grateful for their strength and wisdom."
For celebrations: "We celebrate the traditions of the Indigenous People of the Lower Columbia and the resilience of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, who inspire us to care for the land and one another."
In Practice:
Incorporate Indigenous art and stories into gatherings.
Partner with local Indigenous artists and organizations.
Begin meetings and events with this acknowledgment to ground us in respect and equity.
The Beginning Verse
Refined Verse for General Use:
"Steadfastly, I take my place on this earth.
With certainty, I walk through life.
Strength flows into my heart.
Love fills the core of my being.
Hope guides all that I do.
Trust shines through my thinking.
These six gifts accompany me through life."
Suggestions for Adaptability:
For team-building: "Together, we take our places on this earth,
Certain in the steps we take as a community."For seasonal events: "As the seasons turn, I take my place on this earth.
Hope blooms like spring, and love holds me steady."For children’s gatherings: Simplify with gestures:
"I take my place on this earth,
Love in my heart,
Strength in my steps,
Hope in all I do."
Meaning and Intent: This verse grounds us in integrity, strength, and compassion, encouraging us to foster meaningful connections and thoughtful action.

Why This Matters
These practices are not just rituals—they are living expressions of who we are and what we value as a community. They foster connection, honor diversity, and inspire intentionality in every aspect of our work and gatherings.
